This exhibition marks the first time their work-the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions-has been shown in dialogue together, taking visitors into their career-long conversations that began when they met in a photography class in 1976.ĭawoud Bey & Carrie Mae Weems: In Dialogue is organized by the Grand Rapids Art Museum, with presenting support generously provided by MillerKnoll. Traveling to the streets of Harlem, the coastal Sea Islands, sites of the historical Underground Railroad, and the American South, the work of Bey and Weems explores ideas grounded in the experiences of Black people refracted through issues of gender, class, and systems of power. Longtime friends and mutual inspirations, Bey and Weems both explore complex visions of Black life in America through intimate portraits, dynamic street photography, and conceptual studies of folklore, culture, and historical sites. In an iconic early series, the artist deconstructs the ethnographic gaze that has long trailed Black subjects. 'Dawoud Bey & Carrie Mae Weems: In Dialogue' is an exhibition that presents over 140 works by two of today’s most significant photo-based artists. Carrie Mae Weems Confronts the Fraught History of American Photography In 'From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried,' Weems deconstructs the ethnographic gaze that has long trailed Black subjects. The exhibit closes January 22, so if you wish to see it in person, make sure you do so in time.Dawoud Bey & Carrie Mae Weems: In Dialogue We'll examine her scathing 'Ain't Jokin' series and her influential 'Kitchen Table ' self-portraits then see how she began to incorporate text and archival photographs into her work as she engaged with the history of colonialism and modernism. January 24 will bring us to Weems, whose earliest body of work depicts her own extended family to showcase the joys and tribulations of everyday Black lives. We'll look at his 'Class Pictures' of teenagers, his heartrending 'Birmingham Project,' and his recent turn to landscape, capturing images of sites along the Underground Railroad. On January 17, we will look at the career of Dawoud Bey beginning with his early street photography in Harlem and how that progressed to his use of large format Polaroid cameras. This touring photo exhibition focuses on four decades of work from Dawoud Bey and Carrie Mae Weems, who first met in Harlem in the 1970s and have remained friends ever since as each has tackled. Both born in 1953, Bey and Weems are MacArthur Genius Grant recipients whose photographic work explores the conditions of African American life.
